Google launched two new Android applications that will allow users to dictate voice actions to their phones and link phones with information from their desktop Chrome browser. This means Google adds “Voice Actions” to its Android 2.2 Froyo search capabilities. The tool makes use of voice commands to initiate a wide range of actions on the phone.
Google: To use Voice Actions, tap the microphone button on the Google search box on your home screen, or press down for a few seconds on the physical search button on your phone to activate the ‘Speak Now’ screen.” Once you’ve done that, users speak any of a series of commands and the phone will take it from there.
For example, Android users can say, “Send text to Johnson Peter.” The device will open the text messaging application and then allow you to dictate a message to that person. Other commands will allow users to listen to music, call businesses or contacts, send emails, open Web sites, navigate to businesses, obtain directions and call up maps.
The app is free but if you want the app, you’ll only find it on the new Motorola Droid 2 from Verizon and the now discontinued Nexus One. Those phones that run the updated Android 2.2 software, which Google says will be rolled out gradually to other Android phones, including Sprint’s HTC Evo and older Droid phones. “We expect other Android devices to receive the Android 2.2 software update over the next few months,” says Google, in a statement.
The other new feature links a Chrome browser with a new extension on a desktop with a new extension to Android phones. This allows someone looking up driving directions on the desktop, for example, to click a little mobile phone icon in his or her Chrome extensions list and have that information sent to the Android phone. The app is available now for Android smartphone running latest Android 2.2 Froyo.
